Coming up on October 2nd, I will be remotely participating in Reading the Migration Library’s Undercurrents & Folds, An Artist Book Exchange Event, as part of Volume MTL Art Book Fair (J.W. McConnell Building, 1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W., 4TH SPACE, Montreal, Quebec). Bring a zine or artist book to exchange, or just come to meet the artists and hear them talk about the project, its alternative distribution methods, and its role in circulating creative production on the topics of migration and diaspora. You can attend in-person or online (via Zoom registration or watching live on YouTube).
I’m looking forward to joining RML leads Lois Klassen and Deanne Achong and fellow artist Leah Decter for this session across multiple timezones!
In other news, this year has mostly been a little quiet on the art-making/sharing front due but I’ve been heartened to participate in multiple opportunities to speak about my work — including in an undergraduate course at UBC this spring. More recently in August, myself, Rita Wong, and David Ng came together for a joint webinar to speak about “Race, Labour and Worker Co-Op Values” as part of my newly launched window displays in Vancouver’s Chinatown:
In the spring, I wrote a new piece, “In the Same Breath,” which I was invited to present at “Honouring the Land,” an open mic event hosted by the incredible Toronto-based Living Hyphen. They also published my personal essay “Tip of My Tongue,” way back in 2018. This open mic was a first for me and I was excited to share space with many beloved and new friends. Watch the recording:
It’s been 15 years since my very first group artist talk and 10 years since my first solo one (!). I don’t take these opportunities to speak about my practice for granted as I continue to grow my livelihood as an independent artist and hope to pay it forward with something new I’m working on, one day soon : )
