Hilda and Clare re-visions 2009’s Maxine and I, this time drawing on Hilda Glynn-Ward’s “The Writing On the Wall: Chinese and Japanese Immigration to BC, 1920.” In the vein of a ‘call and response,’ the act of repetitive writing and simultaneous erasing is accomplished by the layering of my own response (“What an unnatural disaster!”) – from a concept by author Mitsuye Yamada – over a line from Glynn-Ward (“The country will be flooded!”).
